Non-Theistic Psalm no. 5

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: An image of a lyre is featured based on modern reconstructions of an ancient instrument known as the "kinnor" - the kind of lyre that King David used. Halway framing the kinnor is a question mark. This image is for the alternative psalms that I wrote and posted on my blog (virtualstoa.org). Unlike the traditional psalms which pretty much require religious belief for you to use them -- these psalms (the Non-Theistic psalms) impose no such requirement at all for their use.

Non-Theistic Psalm no. 5: Composed 2018-02-26 in the evening.
Some of us live short lives and others live long lives
But only relative to the typical human life span.
Even the longest lived person to ever live
Lived but a moment in the span of recorded history.
And even the whole span of recorded history
Is tiny compared to the approximate two million years
Since the human genus first appeared
As the fossils reveal to the scientists today.
And the time since the human genus first appeared,
As tiny as one human life is beside it,
Is but a small fraction of the Cenozoic Era
Since the non-avian dinasours went extinct.
And still they were around much longer than now they’ve been extinct,
But even the time since they first appeared
Is still very brief next to the vast expanse of time
That life is known to have existed on planet Earth.
Some of us live short lives and others live long lives
But even the longest lives aren’t so much as a blink.
Compared to the vastness of the Universe’s time span,
Long or short, my days are nothing at all.
So instead of fretting if I live long enough,
Which would be the most futile thing to do,
Instead I strive to do best with the time that I’ve got
And the Universe will continue after I die.
